Brazilian wood industry sectoral study published

The Brazilian Association of Mechanically-Processed Timber Industry (ABIMCI) published its 2016 Sectoral Study in early November 2016. The sectors covered in the study include plywood, sawnwood, wooden doors, mouldings and wooden flooring.

This study reports that 57% of the jobs in the forest and wood based industry sectors are in the processed wood industries and that most of the industries are SMEs producing a wide range of products mainly for the domestic market.

The study provides information that can be used in a practical way by industries, government and authorities to assess business strategies and public policy plans that contribute to the sector’s development.

According to ABIMCI’s evaluation the data show that, despite difficulties caused by domestic economic crisis and some challenges in the world timber markets, the Brazilian industry continues to develop and is gaining ground in international markets.

The timber sector has expectations for growth in the domestic housing market which can grow significantly.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) the housing deficit in Brazil exceeds 5.8 million homes.

Among the priorities of ABIMCI are the need to expand product certification, work on improvement and development of technical standards, contribute to the improvement of Brazilian wood exports, defend the interests of the sector and promote sustainable practices and transparency.

Wentachee Valley Museum Awarded $1,000 Grant To Restore Hardwood Flooring

Seattle – Each year the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation provides grant funding through the Valerie Sivinski Washington Preserves Fund to organizations across the state diligently engaged in preserving local historic resources. Founded in 1976, the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation is a private nonprofit organization with a mission to preserve Washington’s historic places through advocacy, education, collaboration, and stewardship.
While the awards are modest, each year recipients relate the important role this program plays in leveraging additional contributions, providing support, and ultimately achieving project goals. The program embodies the mission of the Washington Trust by assisting preservation projects where they really happen – at the local level.
Recipients of the 2017 Valerie Sivinski Washington Preserves Fund grant awards were publicly announced on December 6 at the Washington Trust’s annual Holiday Benefit held at the Stimson-Green Mansion, their landmark headquarters. As a statewide organization that strives to connect to communities from across our state, the Washington Trust was pleased to announce a slate of awardees representing broad geographic distribution. The 2017 grants were awarded to the following organizations:

  • Ritzville Museum Volunteers, Ritzville – $1,000 to repair deteriorated framing elements of the exterior porch on the 1890 Frank R. Burroughs House. As a museum, the Burroughs House, listed in the National Register, provides a glimpse of life in early Ritzville.
  • Thorp Mill Town Historic Preservation Society, Thorp – $2,000 to stabilize deteriorated structural columns in the mill’s basement. Stabilization work will allow K-12 educational tours to continue to occur at the circa 1883 mill, which is listed in the National Register.
  • Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center, Wenatchee – $1,000 to restore hardwood flooring at the 1909 Wells House. Listed in the National Register, this work caps the first phase of planned rehabilitation work at the Wells House, which includes electrical and plumbing upgrades as well as rehabilitation of interior light fixtures and sconces.
  • Greater Kent Historical Society, Kent – $1,000 for restoration of decorative leaded glass windows on the Bereiter House. Constructed in 1908, the Bereiter House is listed in the Kent Register of historic places and serves as home to the Greater Kent Historical Society.
  • Kirkland Woman’s Club, Kirkland – $1,000 to stabilize a pair of character-defining chimneys atop the Kirkland Woman’s Club, securing them to the roof to prevent collapse. The Kirkland Woman’s Club is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Puyallup Historical Society, Puyallup – $1,000 for rehabilitation work on the carriage entrance and portico of the 1890 Ezra Meeker Mansion in Puyallup. The Washington Trust is thrilled to once again support rehabilitation work to this truly significant resource.
  • Steamer Virginia V Foundation, Seattle – $500 to fabricate a new spring line and breast line on the Virginia V. The Virginia V, a National Historic Landmark, is the largest wooden, steam driven vessel in the United States certified to carry passengers by the Coast Guard. The lines are essential to the safe operation of the vessel.
  • Masonic Temple Association, Ellensburg – $2,000 to replace deteriorated exterior trusses on the roof of the 1890 Masonic Temple. As a recipient of a building assessment grant in 2016, the Masonic Temple Association utilized the data collected to inform their grant request.
  • Quilcene Historical Museum, Quilcene – $1,500 to restore the original tile on the fireplace surround of the 1892 Hamilton-Worthington House. The fireplace work is part of a broader, multi-phased effort to acquire, restore, interpret and program the National Register-listed building.

In addition to cash grants, for the second year running Artifacts Consulting has donated pro bono building assessments as part of the Sivinski Fund Grant program. This year’s building assessment is being awarded to two projects:

  • Colfax Downtown Association, Colfax –Building assessment services for the 1912 Rose Theater in downtown Colfax, with the goal of ultimately re-opening the historic theater.
  • Friends of Marine Supply and Hardware, Anacortes – Building assessment services for the 1910 Marine Supply & Hardware Building. Explore Global wood and laminate flooring market that is expected to reach USD 92.64 billion by 2020

The global wood & laminate flooring market is expected to reach USD 92.64 billion by 2020. Technological advancements have led to the development of new innovative products and do-it-yourself (DIY) installation techniques, which has substantially widened the scope across residential as well as commercial flooring applications.

Increasing demand in the new construction and home improvement sectors is expected to be the key driving force for the wood & laminate flooring market over the forecast period.

The volatile prices of wood and other raw materials and the increasing costs of production are expected to challenge wood & laminate flooring industry growth over the forecast period.Stringent laws and regulations against deforestation by governments across the globe and the consequent need of imports of raw materials have shrunk manufacturers’ profits to a large extent. Increasing concern over environmental impact has considerably affected the wood & laminate flooring market.

Further key findings from the study suggest:

Engineered wooden floors have gained prominence over the last few years owing to favorable characteristics such as cost-effectiveness, exclusiveness, and dimensional stability. Solid wood constitutes a significant market share owing to its moderate price, albeit installation and finishing considerably increase the total time and cost requirements.

Although a vast majority of the market is comprised of hardwood species, softwood flooring is used in niche applications.

Wood & laminate flooring is primarily preferred in residential applications with residential replacement generating significant demand. Residential new construction and commercial sectors such as retail have increasingly adopted wood & laminate flooring solutions.

Owing to their ability to sustain high traffic, laminate flooring has witnessed a surge in demand from commercial sectors.

Increased demand from the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) is expected to open up new avenues for wood & laminate flooring market growth over the forecast period. Changing lifestyles coupled with increasing construction activity in Asia Pacific are expected to propel market growth in the region.

Wood flooring demand in regions experiencing perennially cold climatic regions such as the U.S. and majority of the European countries is expected to be augmented as wood helps to maintain warmth.

Key wood & laminate flooring market players include Shaw Industries, Pergo, Mohawk Industries, Millstead, Mannington Mills, Interface, Bruce, and Armstrong. Emerging market players have innovated to make their presence felt in the industry.

Some of the recent trends include Smith & Fong Corporation’s side-ways flooring and Columbia Forest Products’ & Teragren’s PureBond technology flooring.

A weird but wonderful pairing: Tiles and wood

WILLIAM COVINTREE

New York interior designers Britt and Damian Zunino of Studio DB have been experimenting with this trend, including in their home.

Don’t knock it till you try it. Combining hexagonal tiles directly into wood might sound like a strange interiors combination, but it is fast becoming a trend that’s solving transitional flooring dilemmas worldwide.

Going against years of neatly separated spaces, the method involves blending the edge of an area of hexagonal tiles directly into wood, and it’s a movement that has recently flooded Pinterest.

Until recently the clever grouping of these materials has traditionally been reserved for cafes and restaurants as seen in the Bangkok eatery below.

New York interior designers Britt and Damian Zunino of Studio DB have been experimenting with this trend, including in their home, and say it’s easy to achieve.

“The first step is getting your contractor on board, but the actual work isn’t that complicated,” they told MyDomaine.

“We had the advantage of designing a similar floor for a loft in TriBeCa before our own home,” Britt Zunino says.

“In that project, as well as our own, the bathtub is in an open master suite. We loved the idea of the tile anchoring the bathtub…[and] of the tile bleeding into a softer material like wood,” she says.

The distinction between the materials works to define the space and creates an interesting texture.

There is also the opportunity to play with colour combinations using different tile samples.

In New Zealand, The Tile Depot general manager Mike Sydall says the idea solves the problem of how to finish one area of flooring and start another – something people have struggled with for years.

Wooden floors are common in New Zealand homes, but Kiwis also love tiles, he says, so this is an interesting fix.

“Transition areas have long been an unattractive patch job. This is a really eye-catching solution,” Sydall says. “I love it.”

Tilers often dislike hexagonal tiles because it’s more difficult to achieve a smooth edge, Sydall says.

“But this is a great way to overcome this,” he says. “You’d need a good wood-cutter and tiler to make this happen.”
