In this article we want to discuss Sanding Marks and what is called “Shellout or Dishing of Springwood” to better educate the homeowners that want to keep their hard wood floors beautiful.
Sanding Marks
Sanding marks are basically sanding imperfections such as scratches, drum marks, dishouts, swirl marks and stop marks. These are sometimes caused by problems with the big machine, the sanding drum being out of alignment, the actual drum being out of round and where there are hard spots on the sanding drum itself. Incorrect sand paper installation or running the machine in the wrong direction can also cause this. Other causes can include a variety of situations such as using a sanding machine with worn pulleys or using a machine with bad bearings in the fan housing. Using a machine where the wheels are dirty or out of alignment, poor splice or seams on the abrasive can cause this or damage to the abrasive that is used. This is also caused by there being dirt or grit on the buffers abrasive or using an abrasive that is too aggressive on the buffer itself. Sometimes this is caused by bad workmanship where there is nothing wrong with the machine or equipment at all.
The cure for this problem is to determine if the source of the situation is the equipment. Then, fix the issue. Check the abrasive for any imperfections. You can try hand scraping the area to remove deep scratches or where there may be drum or stop marks. Another technique is to do a light sanding with a big machine on the affected areas at a 7-15 degree angle, then go over the floor again, this time straight.
Shellout-Dishing of Springwood
This is uneven wear between segments of annual rings. This can also be known as “Dishout”. This can be baused by heavy traffic or repeated sliding of heavy furniture. It can also be caused by water used in maintenance and tracked onto the floor. This is seen especially in peeled-face engineered products under desks with heavy foot and caster wear.
The cure for this is to sand and refinish the floor. Then you must implement better maintenance practices. You should change casters to wide, non-marking rubber ones if you can.
